Everyone loves animals, we at BowlDogs especially do. Heck, we even named our entire establishment after them! Dogs are our whole thing! So it’s more than fitting for us to host a collaboration bowling tournament with the Iowa Humane Alliance. Who is the Iowa Humane Alliance? Well, I’m glad you asked! They are one of Eastern Iowa’s leading spay and neuter clinics and are committed to providing affordable services to our community in order to combat over-population. There’s nothing worse than animals left on the streets or overly full animal shelters so, together with our friends at the IHA, we’re all doing what we can to keep the pet population to a housable and loveable number.

Keeping the population to a manageable level isn’t the only reason why spaying and neutering is important. There’s a lot of health benefits too! As stated on the official Iowa Humane Alliance website:

  • Spayed and neutered pets tend to live longer.  A recent large-scale study demonstrated that, on average, neutered male cats live 63% longer than those who are not neutered. Spayed female cats live an average of 39% longer than unspayed cats. This increase in life span was also seen in dogs, with neutered males living 18% longer and spayed females living 23% longer than their unaltered counterparts.
  • Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the chances of your pet developing many serious forms of cancer.
  • Pets that have been spayed and neutered are less likely to roam. They tend to stay closer to home and are less likely to get lost or hit by a car.
  • While weight gain can happen after sterilization, with proper diet and exercise, your pet should maintain a healthy body condition. As pet’s age, their metabolism does tend to slow down, and adjusting their diets and exercise accordingly will help.
  • Their basic personalities won’t be affected by the surgery. They will still be the same happy pet they were before.

In addition to the health benefits to spaying and neutering, there’s behavioral benefits as well! Pets tend to be less aggressive, calmer, and more affectionate when they’ve visited a clinic and gotten the big alteration. Plus they are less likely to urine mark and wander in search of a mate, that means, as stated earlier, there’s a much less chance of them getting lost or hit by a car. For female animals, it eliminates their monthly heat cycle. That means it eliminates the “bleeding, inappropriate urination, constant crying or yowling, and general nervousness” – Iowa Humane Alliance. Overall I think it’s clear to see that our friends over at the IHA are doing a lot of good and we’re more than happy to aid them in their mission here at BowlDogs.

Speaking of helping them aid their mission, what can a bowling alley do to help spay and neuter animals? Again, I’ve got your answers. This Saturday, October 4th BowlDogs is hosting a tournament in collaboration with the Iowa Humane Alliance to boost awareness and funds for the organization. We will also be serving two one day only mocktails, the black cat mocktail and the pirate puppy, and donating half of ALL proceeds to our friends at the IHA. We would be more than happy to have you join us in support of all of the hard and good work they’re doing for a good cause. Our collaboration tournament will be a great way to, not only have a bit of fun on the weekend, but help a few furry friends in the process. So come on down this Saturday from 11:00am to 3:00pm to BowlDogs and crank out a few strikes and spares. Make sure you have a couple of completely alcohol free mocktails too! All, of course, for the love of animals.
